Job Corps services are free to the student, free to employers who hire them, and are fully supported by the Federal government. Job Corps trains young adults to become independent, responsible and reliable employees in various trades. ACRT trains them to become entry-level arborists through their Job Corps training.

Job Corps is the only national, residential program which integrates academic, vocational and social skills training, paces the program to meet the students’ individual needs, provides an opportunity for them to try out their new skills in the workplace, feeds them, clothes them, houses them and pays them to attend and graduate! It is performance-based education, and it is excellent preparation for performance-based work.

Job Corps is continuously accepting new students and graduating current students. While in the program, the students are surrounded by peers, advisors, instructors, counselors and living-quarters personnel. Their days are planned; their recreation is planned; they have a social life; they have trips home if they desire. They are taught to plan their futures. They have to follow rules; they have to prepare themselves to become independent. They progress through orientation, academic training for high school or GED completion, vocational training, social skills training, other educational opportunities, and advanced training, if they want. They are continuously coached by exceptional peer groups, counselors, administrative staff and instructors.

Location of Training

Most centers offer from 10 to 20 career choices. The Urban Forestry program is offered at five locations across the country, and we are constantly adding others. The states currently offering the program are Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Oregon and Vermont. Students may request specific careers if they are willing to go where that career is offered. Employers can request Job Corps training for individuals if the trainee meets the requirements of Job Corps. To find out if you are a potential trainee and are eligible for Job Corps services, please call 1-800-733-JOBS.

Study Shows Job Corps Doubles ROI

Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. is known for its high-quality, objective research to support decisions about our nation’s most pressing social policy problems. The firm has conducted some of the most important studies of healthcare, welfare, education, employment, nutrition and early childhood policies and programs in the United States. Its research provides a sound foundation for decisions that affect the well being of Americans.

Job Corps is America’s largest residential education and training program for disadvantaged youth between 16-24. Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, this voluntary residential training program offers vocational, academic and social skills training for youth 16-24 at 118 centers nationwide. The program services 70,000 youth annually.

The U.S. Congress authorized an independent Mathematica study to determine the success of Job Corps. Their four-year longitudinal study, completed in 2001, has found that Job Corps returns $2.02 for every dollar invested in the program. These positive results come from graduates of Job Corps working more hours, paying more taxes, engaging in fewer crime-related activities and relying less on public assistance than their non-Job Corps counterparts.

ACRT provides the Urban Forestry trade through Job Corps, which in turn prepares young adults to take their place as entry-level tree care employees. For more information, review our Direct Referral to ACRT’s Job Corps Urban Forestry Program.
